DCPUManager 2 aka DCPUManager PrefPane aka "It will kill your OSX (because it can!)"

Zee Introduction!
Here it is!
Only very brave lab rats should try it! And I really mean it! If it blows it blows, it will rather not kill your OSX but might take some time to kill it.

I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY ON WHAT IT DOES TO YOUR MACHINE. IF YOU HAVE ANY COMPLAINTS ADDRESS THEM TO YOUR CAT, DOG, HAMSTER OR WHATEVER YOU KEEP THERE.

First uninstall instructions if something goes wrong :)

Uninstall Procedure:
Follow the order or you are doomed!

1. if you still see the Status Dot (Green/Yellow/Red) in the Title Bar next to the clock:
- start the DCPUManager PrefPane and press Disable button. If the dot it is still there you are doomed (just joking)
2. Press "Kill" button in PrefPane... press a few times... you should get message that the thing is dead
3. if you installed to local then: rm -rf ~/Library/PreferencePanes/DCPUManager2.prefPane if you installed for all users then: rm -rf /Library/PreferencePanes/DCPUManager2.prefPane
4. Make sure things are not running anymore:
as root: ps -A | grep TheThrott
if you still see it running then just:
kill -9
5. If you do not see dot, recycle your TitleBar stuff by doing:
killall SystemUIServer

Should be fine

Installation:

Download, unzip, click on the unzipped DCPUManager2.prefPane it will launch your Preferences, ask you where to install...

After installing: select it in preferences:

Launch TheThrottlingThing - it is the core application. It must be running to have dynamic throttling enabled
You can Enable/Disable the Status Dot in Title Bar. The dot changes color from Green through yellow to Red to indicate the current running frequency. The higher freq the more Red.

Thats all :)

Side Effects:
Not much... but you need to Launch it from PrefPane after every reboot unless someone smart figures out how to run DCPUManager2.prefPane/Contents/Resources/TheThrottlingThing.app/Contents/MacOS/TheThrottlingThing
at startup with root priviledges.
The Status Dot probably will be enabled after reset... not sure tho :P
ACPICPUThrottle.kext must be loaded before starting this mess application.

Changelog:

0.0.a3 2007.05.18
- added possibility to change frequency manually to desired ones and to dynamic state (default)
- added more checking on what is running (probably still some bugs there)

Update from older version:

IMPORTANT! If you update from older version first perform COMPLETE uninstall procedure.

Slowmotion

Great App! Tried DCPUManager 0.5 before. One big showstopper for me is that the system feels like slowmotion when the frequencies go down. It would be very usable if just the performance would drop down. But because of the slowmotion effect, the time keeps desyncing :-(

This is known problem

Duddie's picture

The problem seems to be in kernel and is related to FSB (I think). Hopefully it will be soon fixed. It affects everyone.

error in the prefpane version

Ran for several days fine, then woke from sleep and I saw this error in the log.

I havne't seen you on irc in a while, but i have the .4 source. how different is the prefpane (the throttling thing)??

Anyway, hope all is well.

7)Now back to the last finder window, drage 'TheThrottlingThing' file to the login items and check the Hide box, and close System Preferences.
8)Now open the 'terminal', it is found in 'utilities' folder in 'applications' folder.
9) copy paste what's between the ' ' : 'sudo chown -R 0:0 ' and drag 'TheThrottlingThing' file from its window to the terminal so that it automatically writes its path. then hit enter
10)write your password when prompted
11) Back to the finder window, right click on 'TheThrottlingThing' and click 'show package contents'
12)double click 'contents' folder in the new opening window, then double click the 'MacOS' folder to find another file called 'TheThrottlingThing'
13)now go back to the terminal and copy paste what's between the ' ' : 'sudo chmod +s ' and drag the second 'TheThrottlingThing' file to the terminal to write down its path then hit enter
14)write password when prompted.
15)congrats, now u got a startup dcpumanager2 prefpane without the password prompt every now and then.
